Re: What are your least favorite chores?
(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 05:23 am (UTC)(link)I have outdoor compost but before I did I had annual fruit fly invasions. Because we have cats I never used sprays, instead I did the "natural" trap and it worked. Get you have a leftover plastic soda bottle (no larger than a 20oz) even if you have to nab one at work. Cut the top off about an inch below the neck where it widens out, enough extra to turn the top into a deep funnel - make a clean circular cut, you need both top and bottom intact with no slits/holes. Fill the bottom of the bottle with a mixture of water and vinegar (1:1) with a few drops of dish soap and a small piece of an old piece of fruit (bait!). Turn the top upside down and nest it into the bottom so it forms a downward funnel and tape the sucker in place. Voila! Flies go in to get the bait, and if they don't down in the soap film, they can't get out because the funnel is a mystery.
I haven't had a fly problem last more than a day or two using this kind of trap, even if I botch it and don't put enough bait or soap in the trap.
