Eh, unless they’ve asked not to have that sort of thing pointed out to them, it’s probably fine if they just posted Chapter 5. A DM would be less awkward than a comment pointing out the typo to the entire world, but whatever. If the fic’s old, then it’s considered rude by most people to point out random typos unless the author has indicated that they’re into that sort of thing. It’s the difference between telling someone that they’re wearing mismatched shoes when they’re heading out to the party and telling them when they’re on their way home.

I think of it more like telling someone their fly is down or they have a sock static stuck to their back while they are on the way to the party.

But the people who get upset about it take it very seriosly and get way upset ime and are usually sensitive to a lot of types of comments so I just avoid commenting alltogether. Solves the problem!
