I actually disagree with this. Xander seemed more like a Whedon self-insert before we learned what we now know about Whedon. Whedon is actually much worse than Xander. There's still some shared self-pitying toxic nerd stuff but that's the limit of it.

I feel like maybe Xander is how Whedon views himself, though. He's in actuality more terrible. But that's exactly the feel I get of Xander: he thinks he's a great feminist when actually he's rather sexist and kind of a dick.
