Re: Happy Halloween FS! 🎃 👻 👹
(Anonymous) 2024-11-01 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)On the other hand, our streetlights haven't worked for over a year; maybe they just went somewhere they were less likely to be squashed.
And then a bunch of asshole teenagers who weren't in costume tried to steal my cauldron and I packed it in, sigh. It's huge, solid copper, the traditional witch cauldron shape, and I definitely couldn't replace it on my salary; I got it for $80 at like 75% off a store closeout sale 20 years ago. One of these days I should actually try cooking in it.
I was enjoying myself up until then but next year I need to remember to get dog treats; lots of dog walkers went by. I think the coolest thing was a teenage girl and I think her mom who are new to the US, the girl had an awesome witch hat and cape over her hijab. And they weren't the only people who had never experienced Halloween before, even discounting the tiny toddlers whose parents took video.
I had friends in high school who had never trick or treated either until I loaned them all costumes and we went out. Even though it's technically/tenuously a religious holiday, I really do think it's one of the most fun things Americans do, culturally.
I hope I can go all out next year since Halloween will be on a Friday, but the last time I was really excited and wanted to do more than carve a heap of pumpkins was 2020, when Halloween was on a Saturday and there was a full moon.
And then I ended up just making a sign that said "wear your mask/kick Covid's ass/so I can give out candy next year" and rigged one of those poseable skeletons (wearing a plague doctor mask) to hold it.
The only other people on my block who go all out with their decorations are Trumpers, sigh.
