A generic response is maybe understandable if the recipient is awkward about compliments or maybe didn't like the gift somehow and is trying to be polite. Not that I'm assuming the fault is yours, the recipient might just be bad at responding.

NO response at all though? Asshole behavior.

*assuming the generic response also isn't like "Nice, thanks!" and that's it. Like if it's generic but they seem to have tried, at least they tried.
