What are your favorite horror movies?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-06 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
As classic or as new as you'd like!

As the local World Mythology nerd, I love two horror movies based on folklore.

The Hallow is based on Celtic Mythology and The Ritual is based in Norse Mythology.

Actually, does anyone have other ideas for movies based on mythology?

Watched Errementari recently, a basque language horror film. It is based on an old folktale, The Smith and the Devil.

Favorite of all time is The Thing. I also enjoy Alien. For newer films, Pontypool and Train to Busan.

I love the Hammer Horror Dracula movies, and the 1973 movie The Wicker Man is a huge favorite of mine. (If anyone has any recs along those lines, I'd be very grateful.)

i usually like campy, body horror or sci-fi, so the thing, jacob's ladder, event horizon, the fly, malignant, re-animator are among my favs. I rewatch them regularly.

and I just finished watching the substance (2024) and it's going right up on my favourite list lol that movie was insane in the best way possible

another recent movie I liked a lot is influencer! not gory nor body horror, but the tension is intense! i recommend it to the squeamish horror fans. it's more of a psychological thriller done well.

I just can't get over Hereditary. That film blew my mind.

I keep seeing a ton of ads for that lately...is there a sequel coming out or something? Anyway, I like horror movies but haven't seen one in a long time, I should watch it!

I don't think so. Maybe it's newly streaming on some site? It has some gore and a few jump scares, but I'd classify it overall as psychological horror.

Dog Soldiers. But that's because of Sean Pertwee.

I don't like a lot of horror. The Ritual and Temple are examples that I actually do like, and I recently watched the Nun with basic understanding of the Conjuring universe.

Event HOrizon is my top favorite.

Also love Alien, Halloween I and II, Rosemary's Baby, Misery (the best King adaption hands down), Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, Wicker Man (original), basically any classic Christopher Lee horror, and Hellraiser (minus the ending).

Love American Werewolf in London, It, Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, Frankenstein, The Thing from Another World and Night of the Living Dead.
and the suits should have let Hitchcock use the original ending for the Birds!

ayrt

American Werewolf in London - hell of a transformation
It - Tim Curry always will be the scariest clown in the world
Shaun of the Dead - funny and different, I loved the vinyl scene
Zombieland - the little rule vignettes were so awesome
Frankenstein - heavy hitter, amazingly atmospheric
The Thing From Another World - that rat-a-tat-tat dialog, plus James Arness being a damn scary plant
Night of the Living Dead - that ending sort of leaves you breathless
The Birds - seeing any more than a few birds gathering somewhere makes me wary (so much worse if it's a playground)

Fright Night (1985, fantastic year for movies)-- largely this is a nostalgic pick, it was one of my dad's favorite movies and he shared his love of all things horror with me. But, it holds up for me.

Get Out-- thought that one was just phenomenal.

Pearl-- I hadn't been interested in X but then I just really thought Pearl had a lot of style, did a lot of things that I was into.

Creep-- I didn't like the sequel nearly as much but there was just something about Creep that had me.

I Am Not a Serial Killer-- hhhhhhhhh loved this

Razorback-- a fever dream. Perfect movie, no notes.

They Live-- Man, They Live...

Awww yeah, Fright Night and They Live are in my top 20!

I am seconding Train to Busan, also The Ritual was just fun.
Right now my all time favorite is Nope. As you can probably guess I am not a horror fan - I love horror elements or short stories but I just get bored with horror pretty easily.

I'm a bit of a whimp when it comes to hard core horror, so I do lean towards the funny or fantasy/not-too-real kind of horror.

There's a few old comedy horrors that I love best like Comedy of Terrors with Vincent Price, Carry on Screaming and Abbot and Costello Meets Frankenstein. Then there's the 90s Addams Family movies, Jennifer's Body and Death Becomes Her.
Then there's the Sci-fi/fantasy ones like Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman, Blade and the Resident Evil movies.

Also, I love a horror musical too:
Anna and the Apocalypse, Sweeney Todd, Rocky Horror, Nightmare Before Christmas and Phantom of the Paradise.
