Petty things that make you give up on a piece of media?

(Anonymous) 2024-11-07 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about this yesterday. There's a podcast I was listening to for awhile and I had to stop because there are a couple words the hosts constantly mispronounce and it was driving me crazy. I even started questioning myself, like 'have I been pronouncing these words wrong my whole life?' (even though everyone else I'd ever heard say them pronounced them the same way I do) but I looked it up, and no. And they're from the US like I am and English is their first language so it's not a 'they pronounce things differently in different countries' thing. They're just wrong. And it annoys me.

Anyone else have really dumb reasons why they quit watching/listening to/reading something?

Podcasts where they spend the first 30 minutes rambling about nothing or random personal things before getting into the episode.

I could just skip ahead, but then I don't get all the random references to the intro later. Also the podcasts that do this also are the ones that tend to have annoying long-running in-jokes that nobody gets unless they've listed to everything including all the intros. No thanks

This, only but it is rambling paragraphs of authors notes on a fanfic. Never read those.

At least with those, you can just skip it in one click, with podcasts/videos you basically have to fast-forward through it until it stops...

Podcast anon here

Yeah, plus fics don't reference their A/Ns constantly in the middle of the fic itself or turn them into in-jokes that you wouldn't understand without reading the notes.

Time skips. I couldn't bring myself to continue reading One Piece and Naruto after the time skips because. they might still be the same but those aren't the characters I love (and Naruto became the Sasuke show anyway so no regrets there).

I don't think it's a dumb reason. I wouldn't take seriously this hosts.

But I do have petty reasons to drop media all the time. And I forget immediately what it was too. But for example I hate when you have obnoxious non-diegetic pop songs in the show. The only exception was Old Guards because I liked them enough but I was thiiiis close to dropping.

Incorrect stressing. English is a stress based language, and what word or even syllable you stress changes the goddamned meaning. Get it wrong and it's like nails down a chalkboard for me.

I was just thinking about a similar thing recently! There are things that are two words and I don't know if it's a regional thing or what, but everyone I know puts the stress on the same word/syllable as I do. I don't know which is technically "right" but it's kind of jarring when I hear someone (usually podcast hosts) put the stress on the other word/syllable. There are a few different examples but only two are coming to mind right now: Whole Foods and Taco Bell.

I and all of my family/friends say Whole FOODS and Taco BELL, but I was listening to a podcast recently where they kept saying WHOLE Foods and were making fun of anyone who said it the other way. I feel like in general with two-word things like that I tend to put the stress on the second word, but I'm not sure why or which way is technically "correct".

I'm glad this isn't a deal breaker for me, since it's really common in video game voice acting. (Bethesda games are the worst because they have a weird way of doing it, but I've never played a game with voice acting where I didn't have a few 'why did you put the stress THERE?' moments. ... Or I suppose, 'why did YOU put the STRESS there?' to be consistent with them. >_>)

A cast without diversity in terms of traditional attractiveness. Be brave - have some "ugly" people on your cast. At least put a plus size woman in.

If the book doesn't grab my attention immediately (like in the opening sentences), I drop it.

I'll give it a few pages or even up to a chapter if I'm feeling generous, but yeah. Reading is my fun escapism, if I struggle to get through something because it's dull or poorly written, that defeats the purpose.

This is a common cdrama thing, but it's not uncommon for the female lead (who might be in her 20s-late 30s) to play both the youthful teenage version of themselves as well as the adult version. This is... ehhh. A little strain on the credibility sometimes. But what makes it worse is that sometimes the teenage character is portrayed like a five year old: high pitched voice, baby talk, exaggerated pouting, stomping around and crying (like literally, "Weeeehhhhhhhhhh!!!!") if something goes wrong, melodramatically clinging to someone's sleeve, arm or leg while wailing like a toddler, showing a toddler-level of rationality and impulse control, etc. etc. I mean, come on. What 16-17 year old have you seen act like this unless they've got serious social adjustment issues?

This is played like it's cute, and it's often the male lead who takes on the adult role of pacifying the female lead, comforting her with candy or whatever. Cdramas have a weird infantilization issue going on with box men and women, but it's waaaay more common in female characters. It doesn't bother a lot of people, but I really hate it and will backbutton out of a show where the FL does this.

Sorry if it's a dumb question, but what are box men and women? I'm not into cdramas but this term is intriguing me for some reason.

LOL, sorry about that... I meant BOTH men and women. I don't know where "box" came from.

Ooooof, yes. Even the actual adult female characters (adult as in, sometimes they're hundreds, if not thousands of years old) are like that sometimes.
It has made me very picky with my dramas in the sense, that if I sense that romance is the main plot, I'll likely not watch it. There needs to be something else going on, then it's usually okay.

Same, nonny. It's so annoying because it's so unnecessary, and I side eye people who defend it by trying to say that's legit for a teenager (WTF?) or that the character is supposed to seem young. Uh, you can "seem young" without acting like you're five. There's a much wider range between toddler and adult behavior than people are acknowledging here, and FLs should really aim for the upper teen portion of the spectrum rather than wailing and pouting.

It's so embarrassing to watch and gives me the ick that anyone thinks that's cute. But then, cdramas have a weird angle on infantilisation being part of a romance trope. It makes me really reluctant to watch cdramas that are mostly romance. I avoid xianxia like the plague.

I once dropped a YT channel because they were talking seriously about going all in on crypto...

Mispronunciations (particularly of names) bother me somewhat, too, though I've only ever stopped watching one thing because of it - MrKravin's play of This Bed We Made (where he kept reading Jacques as Jack Wheeze) - Kravin has a lot of trouble with non-English names in general, but that was the only one that annoyed me enough to stop, rather than just reflexively 'correct' him. I give him credit for actually looking up how to read Daisuke when he played Mouthwashing. I do give some leeway to people who are just reading something they've never seen before (letsplayers and the like), though, even there can't help thinking 'pause and look it up!', especially when they'll be saying it a lot.

One thing that will consistently make me nope out with letsplayers is when they don't pay attention to the game, and then complain it doesn't make sense. Of course you don't know what's happening, you skipped through the dialogue, or actively refused to read the lore notes! (Mostly, this is an issue with Markiplier and jacksepticeye for the ones I watch with any regularity.) OK, that's not all that petty, but I'm leaving it.

If the bad guy starts to make more sense than the heroes. If they're doing an Evil vs. Other Evil thing I love it, but if they're doing a How Dare They Oppress Us For Eating People thing I'm OUT. I don't finish a lot of vampire media.

I don't listen to any podcast based fiction any more. The first seasons tend to be pretty good but then their reasons for continuing to podcast get thinner and thinner. Also, ad reads from a character! Hate that.

IDK, rarely do I "decide" to stop something. I usually just put things down because life demands attention and then fail to pick it back up because there's something else around.

Soapboxing. As soon as there is any type of morality speech, especially if it's just out of the nowhere just to make the author's ideological point, I'm out. Even if it's a topic I actually agree with. I hate preachiness.
