I don't think you could pick a better person to be inspired by.

It's amazing how much art affects us, particularly when we're young, even simple or silly things. Yet, that's why people create things, even things like muppets.

Jim Henson is amazing. He graduated from my college too ^_^

[identity profile] travelerbytrade.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Awwww! Jim is my life guru. ♥

I have this quote on my Facebook profile (because yes, I love him that much):

"When I was young, my ambition was to be one of the people who made a difference in this world. My hope still is to leave the world a little bit better for my having been here. It's a wonderful life and I love it." -Jim Henson

:) I think he would be really proud to know that he's inspiring you to be a better person. And I'm with you all the way, anon.

Aww,to be honest, just reading that secret made me all teary-eyed too. He seemed like such a sweet person.

I am such a nutjob sometimes. I looked at that picture and was like, 'BUT WHERE ARE HIS FEET?!'

I'm 29 and grew up watching The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. It never once occurred to me until just this moment that there is more than one Kermit.

That’s a beautiful secret.

Wait, Jim Henson's not a spiritual leader? Were you watching the same shows and movies I was? Heck, Fraggle Rock is the best mythology for children I've ever seen.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Jim Henson was a wonderful person, and there's nothing wrong with being inspired by someone who was not only a genius, but an honestly good person who wanted to bring joy to the world the best way he knew how.

There's no way you're alone. Rainbow Connection is on my playlist of songs that make me feel better and inspire me. If I could even come close to having the quality of life that he had, I'll die happy.

Right on, OP. Jim Henson has always been one of my personal heroes, ever since I was a kid. His work continues to speak as much to me now as it did when I was three years old and watching Sesame Street. Thanks for reminding me.

[identity profile] abstract-me.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Jim is absolutely my inspiration. I watched his funeral ceremony on youtube once - bawled my eyes out when all the performers came out for "Just One Person." I lost my family when I was seventeen, and so the way the Muppets come together, making their own family out of friends and bears and chickens and whatevers - that's always been very comforting to me. That family can be anyone you hold your hand out to.

There are so many quotes of his I love, but here are just two:
- "I believe that we form our own lives, that we create our own reality, and that everything works out for the best. I know I drive some people crazy with what seems to be ridiculous optimism, but it has always worked out for me."

- "One of the nice things about puppets is that it's your own hand in there. You can make it do anything you want it to."

Man, now I'm kind of tempted to make a Jim Henson devotee community . If there isn't one already, of course.

My roommate/friend just had an interview for an internship at the Jim Henson Archive Office. You're not alone. :) (He met Grover. He was really excited. He changed his Facebook status to reflect this.)

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Over a decade later Jim Henson's death still makes me tear up. You shouldn't even be remotely embarrassed having him as your inspiration. He's many people's inspiration. Only one thing about your secret though? If your little brothers don't know who he is, tell them. They should know.

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a hard time seeing how being inspired by Jim Henson could ever be a bad thing. You're not alone, either--he's a huge inspiration for me too.

[identity profile] analeisa.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not alone, OP. Jim Henson was an amazing man. Rainbow Connection is one my favorite songs of all time.

[identity profile] secondalto.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
You are not alone OP. I grew up with the Muppets and Sesame Street. My son watched SS growing up and now my daughter is too. It felt like a member of my family died when Jim died. He is and always be one of my greatest inspirations. *uses my only Muppet icon*

I'm with you

[identity profile] angiealight.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
And now I'm all misty-eyed. Jim Henson and his creations have been a huge and important part of my life. Losing him was like losing a family member, even though I never met him. He's such an inspiration in so many ways. <3

[identity profile] hakushaku-sama.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
*joins the club* It doesn't matter what their occupation is--it's all about their life-view, and in that you have picked probably the best person to be inspired by. :D

[identity profile] silenceincities.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
What are you talking about, JIM HENSEN IS AWESOME. WHY IS THIS A SECRET. WHAT KIND OF EVIL WORLD DO WE LIVE IN WHERE SOMEONE FEELS THIS CAN ONLY BE EXPRESSED IN A SECRET.

A Boy and His Frog

[identity profile] kouryou.livejournal.com 2009-09-12 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, you are not alone in the slightest. Another one here whose childhood was filled with learning and wonder from friends called Muppets. Jim Henson is belovedly missed.

Just think of the number of people that man brought and still brings joy to. Looking up to someone who did something like that with their life that cannot possibly be a bad or a silly thing.
