Tell people you're a weeaboo right out of the gate.

I do it all the time. It's all about attitude - if you're mature, well-spoken, and as critical of Japan as you are in love with it, no one will care. If, on the other hand, you wear sweat-stained T-shirts with mecha on them and speak only in fangirl Japanese about how magical and wonderful that country is, it doesn't matter how fervently you deny the fact that you're a weeaboo. Everyone already knows.

The point isn't that you're in love with Japan, as a weeaboo, it's that you won't talk about anything else and wind up annoying the shit out of everyone else. If you're not like that, you're not really a weeaboo.

(It is a secret, horrible guilty pleasure of mine to talk to early-stage weeaboos who try to impress people with the handful of words they know, especially if I can get them to say "yeah I speak Japanese!". At which point my face will light up and I will reply a rapid-fire ええ本当ですか。お上手ですよね!どのぐらい勉強してますか。 At which point they invariably stammer, turn red, and grudgingly admit that they really don't speak much Japanese. It brings warmth to my cold, black, bitter soul. Oh, that and telling them about the Nihonjinron.)

Completely unrelated, but I'm surprised I can still read half of that. XD My failing Japanese hasn't completely left me yet!

It's not as if those are the most complicated questions in the world ;3 If I busted out the 1-kyuu vocab or something to that effect if would have less impact, and be less hilarious, than demonstrating to someone who'd just claimed to "speak" a language that they couldn't even understand - let alone respond to - a question like "how long have you studied it?".

(Like I said - black soul, horrible individual brooding alone in an icy cavern full of Japanese pornography.)

Me too! Although it took me a second to get the "tou" in "Hontou" *cringe*

ハハ私もそれをします。その後でウイブーの顔は尊いです。 XD (Did I use the right "priceless" there? I can't tell which one I should use.)

Also, what's Nihonjinron? I've not heard of it.

Icon for amusement, not aimed at anyone but the kinda weaboo you mentioned. :P

"priceless" as we use it in English doesn't really translate the same way as in Japanese afaik- to use 尊い is calling them literally priceless/treasured/sacred. I would say something like 顔を見るのは楽しい 笑, simpler, but sounds more natural to me.

Could be totally wrong though, seeing as how I just failed 2-kyu I have no confidence anymore D:

That's true, with Japanese nothing can be taken quite so literally. I got the word from http://ja.bab.la/%E8%BE%9E%E6%9B%B8/%E8%8B%B1%E8%AA%9E-%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%AC%E8%AA%9E/priceless.html though, and that thing is eerily accurate (think アンジェラ・アキ music, I've learned a lot from her and that website). I probably should have chosen a different word, though. :P You'd think with my studying it for 6 years I'd at least know which one to pick. >_> Damn my Japanese major failing me again.

Oh, that's interesting (the kanji I immediately recognized, a feat within itself). I would never have considered my Japanese culture classes (which includes advanced Japanese and lit) to be 日本人論. xD;; It's very interesting though.

You make a really good point. It's a shame that people are judged by their interests and not by their actions half the time, but once you get to know people that stops being the case, at least to a certain extent. @ OP: instead of being afraid of being judged, you should be open about your interests while steering clear of the stereotype. I could take that advice myself, actually.

わあ、楽しそう。いつかやってみたいんです!
