Actually, the weeaboo-shaming tendencies of fandom critics were one of my first introductions to criticism of cultural appropriation, which I had never really had a concept of prior to my preteen years. Long before anime, I grew up 'interested' in many cultures of which I had only a shallow understanding (or no understanding at all) and didn't realize that my imitation and/or idolization of a self-edited version of someone else's actual culture, especially if based on a fictional book or movie or brief educational spots on Sesame Street, could be offensive.


I'm really glad that there's criticism of the shallow idolatry of a fabricated fantasy-vision of Japanese culture. Because I had that view of Japanese, and indeed a lot of other cultures, and probably would have gone the way of the standard weeaboo if that fangirlism were allowed to go unchecked.


So while I understand what you mean, and am also hesitant to mention my love of anime for that reason, I can't bring myself entirely against it. I think, or at least hope, that my own sane and self-aware behavior will speak for itself on the matter, and I think yours will too.
