For me, its being really interested in the fandom and contributing fanworks to that space. However, there's the community side to it where people may discuss, come up with theories, or just talking with other people in that community.

Actively and regularly participating in fannish spaces; lurking or consuming fannish media counts if it's following news or reading fic even if you don't comment or anything, those are things you have to actively seek out to do.

A fan of something enjoys a piece of media, someone in a fandom seeks out communities of others who are also into the thing.

I am a fan of a lot of things but being in fandom is being in fandom spaces on the reg, regardless of whether you contribute anything (fic, art, cosplay, meta, character-related playlists, etc). You're still in the space absorbing fan activity by osmosis, which is very different from watching a show and then at best liking it and moving on.

Yup. There are 1) things I enjoy, 2) things I enjoy and am a fan of, and 3) things I enjoy and am a fan of and also in the fandom for. I don't search for fanfic about category 1 or 2.

Enjoying a thing and being willing to talk about the thing you enjoy with other fans.

I think it'd have to be a little more than that. Like "wanting" as opposed to "being willing" to talk about the thing you enjoy with other fans, or wanting to see what other people who like the thing have to say about it. The desire has to come from the person, not prompted externally.

I'm certainly willing to talk about some games and shows I've enjoyed well enough if someone else brings it up, but I'm definitely not in the fandom for all of them and wouldn't care what anyone else happened to think about them if nobody asked.

See I was thinking "willing to talk about it" was too much. I know some DEEP introverts who dont engage beyond consumption of fanworks and MAYBE leaving a like, but I count them.

I'd count consumption of fanworks as actively participating and wanting to see what others have to say about it. It's not like fanfic and fanart constantly falls in your lap without you searching for it. Even if they never comment or leave a like on anything, they're seeking out a community and the stuff the community produces.

Meanwhile like, I enjoyed the first Dragon Age game. I have never bothered to look up fic or art for it. So I'm not in the fandom. But if I decided next week to follow a bunch of Dragon Age feeds and start following the series and fanworks for it then now I'm in the fandom, adding to the overall viewcounts, even if I never talk about it.

Engaging with the media beyond it's original intent (doing more than just reading a book, watching a show/movie, playing a game).

Even if you don't have exchanges with other fans you're still in fandom if you're reading fanfics or watching fan made videos or looking at fan art.
