Kind of a tangent, but I wish more stories had the heroes' self righteous moral stances proven wrong, or pointed out that heroes refusing to be un-noble often puts others in worse and more dangerous positions. Village hero lets the eternal rival bandit leader go because he just respects the man as an opponent so much? Now the peasants still have to deal with all the banditry. Good job?

Not that vigilante-ism or resorting to violence is good or anything, but putting your self esteem/self image and '''deeply held principles''' ahead of someone else's literal health and safety isn't good or heroic either. Both choices can be bad, it's almost never portrayed that way.

Ooh yes! I wish there were many more fics that delved into how characters approach ethical dilemmas. Getting in their head and seeing their reasoning, how they work through complex situations (if they even work through them at all), seeing how they respond to the consequences... While more challenging to write, it would result in such a payoff.

Especially if the source material is something that doesn't dig too deeply into those kinds of questions; Sonic lets Dr. Eggman go and live another day, despite enslaving and experimenting on hundreds of thousands of animals. What happens when he doesn't, or when he's forced to justify those actions? If you firmly believe in the chance of redemption for everyone, what happens if you never see it become actualized? Great secret OP, thank you.

I don't see why it wouldn't be conducive to shipping! It's just other kinds of struggles.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-15 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think characters having to grapple with big moral/ethical issues COULD still be conducive to shipping? Like... are A and B on the same side of the argument about how to handle the issue, and how do they reconcile it if they aren't? Do they have to dig into it together and does that deep one-on-one conversation bring them closer together despite their initial fears that they might have some huge surprise incompatibility in worldviews? Or maybe they find themselves the only two characters in the group pushing for one particular course of action and that makes them consider each other in a different light.

Or maybe it's not about the argument about what to do-- maybe it's how they handle the fallout of what they HAVE done that brings them together! Maybe one of them did something they always swore they'd never do because they were convinced it was for the greater good and they need someone to reassure them that they haven't lost the core of themselves in doing so!

Can I interest you in MDZS?

MDZS as it's actually written, not MDZS as in the "WWX did nothing wrong and that's the whole plot" fan take, at least.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-15 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Does MDZS actually delve into ethics or does it just present them as a backdrop for tragedy so WWX can be rescued by LWJ the isolationist trust fund baby and never have to worry about that shit again

I mean I know it kind of does but it sure doesn't RESOLVE shit, and the fandom at large seems hugely uninterested in ethics unless it's warping and shoehorning the actual philosophical quandries of the book into shallow contrived western class issues

The fandom may be largely uninterested in the ethics but the book sure is. Also, WWX never gets rescued by anyone, at least not from anything more than a stay dog.

The secret is about fic though.

I mean, X-Men fic runs on this, and I'm sure it's not the only fandom that does.

I do love a good case-fic with big moral dilemmas. Whether or not it's got shipping in.

Have you read/watched The Expanse, OP?
