fun fact: in the early days of the Sonic fandom there was a rumor that Tails was originally meant to be a girl before SEGA changed their minds at the last second.

This turned out to be false but there's no reason you can't hc him as a trans/nonbinary character. I have a hc that Knuckles didn't know what gender was until Eggman showed up (he grew up alone on an island in the sky, he likely doesn't understand or know gender norms) and nobody really KNOWS his gender, not even him, so because Eggman probably called him 'boy' and Sonic and Tails likely tacked onto that, people just assume he's male.
