... isn't that literally the entire point of a Soulslike game, though?

I've never played a soulslike game but... what game lets you keep items you already used if you die in a fight? Genuine question because I haven't encountered one.

I mean if you die in most games you reload from your last save, and thus have not lost a thing except the time you wasted fucking up that fight.

If it did this it would no longer be soulslike and be some other genre though?

Yeah, I agree with this. In a normal RPG, cool you die, reload your last save, and have your stuff back.

But in a soulslike game, I'd expect to not get my shit back that easily. That's... how soulslike games work.

Yeah, exactly. The point is for failure to have actual consequences.

You can reclaim your souls, though, and most games replenish your healing. Nioh can even give back some of your bombs, depending on your build. It’s specific games that make you grind for basics like health potions.

(Really, I just like platformers, and every platformer that isn’t Mario has decided to be a Soulslike Metroidvania.)

Speaking strictly to the main soulsbournekiro(ring) series: souls aren't "items" though, they're EXP, and while you "can" reclaim them that doesn't mean you will lmao. Some do replenish your basic healing but not any of your other items.

Also while it's been a hot minute since I last played a Mario, iirc if you use one of the items like the racoon suit or leaf or star what have you from your inventory in Mario III/Super Mario World/etc. and you die you don't get it back. It's gone. Did the new ones change that? Because if so, old school Mario used to be soulslike.
