I don't think AO3 is going away anytime soon, but I do always download my favourite fics... Just in case. It's handy when a writer suddenly decides to delete their work, at least.

Whether it stays or goes (and I personally don't think it will go, its pretty easy to move a site to a site host outside the US), its always a good idea to back up the fic you love onto your hard drive. Authors sometimes remove their fic for many reasons that have nothing to do with current politics.

They're gonna come for porn, much less grimdark sexy easily accessible intensely popular fiction, way before they come for fanworks. If they start censoring GoT, The Boys, or anything that has venture capital money behind it then I'd be worried, but as of right now they've got bigger fish to even begin to attempt to fry with PornHub et. al.

I’ve been downloading fic for years and it’s because no matter how permanent something might seem, nothing ever is. I’ve seen other fic hosting websites disappear, some writers just straight up delete all their work for a fandom when they’re done with it(their call, I’m not mad but I save a backup I can always access). So for me saving fic is simply a practical thing to do.

New administration is cracking down on non-profits of all kinds. I think AO3 is pretty low on the list compared to anything being openly against the MAGA turds, but it's possible. It could be moved outside the US, it could stop being a non-profit, it has a lot more options than, say, homeless or anti-racist charities.

AO3's db and code base is regularly backed up offsite. The archive is safe.
