Breakups happen so it had the potential to feel real. Thing is, I don’t think they did it in a realistic way. And your crazy matches my crazy wasn’t all there was to their relationship. It doesn’t help that the movie bizarrely placed the Avengers interview in a different universe. And sometimes that interview was because Vanessa wanted him to do something that mattered and sometimes he just thought that’s what she wanted. I loved the movie but it had a lot of editing mistakes that crush it under even a little scrutiny.
But also, it would be great to have Deadpool movie where Wade and Vanessa are just together. It’s boring AF now that they’re not together for the majority of screen time in every single movie.

"Realistic, down-to-earth depictions of mentally-stable people having normal relationships" isn't what I'm looking for in a Deadpool movie, you know?

Besides, this breakup didn't feel like a natural follow-up to previous movies. It felt like the writers replaced Vanessa, who was bizarre and offbeat and fun in specific ways, with Generic Stock Unsympathetic Wife Character #1. Meanwhile, they kept Wade's bizarre wackiness, but it felt like they mistook that for "he's just a shallow jokester who needs to learn to care more about other people" -- even though he's already put in a ton of effort to protect other people. (And there's no reason Vanessa wouldn't know that!)

...my little conspiracy theory is that the writers wanted to make Wade and Logan kiss, but Marvel said they weren't allowed to explain polyamory to the Disney audience, so they shoehorned in a divorce. (Then Marvel said they weren't allowed to make Wade and Logan kiss, either.)

+1 it didn't feel like Vanessa.

It's superheroes, why is being realistic a concern at all? Besides, the most realistic part of any superhero movie is surely billionaire Bruce Wayne embezzling funds from his company for his personal projects.

Anyway, as the other comments say - it wasn't handled well at all. I don't know how much the writing team changed over the films, but with both sequels it seems like they had the same problem... Vanessa worked too well with Wade and they just couldn't figure out how to write a character arc while Wade also has a happy home life - or how to juggle having homoerotic chemistry with his co-stars while also having hetero chemistry with Vanessa. This is truly one of the cases where polyamory really is the answer to the love triangles.

I was fine with them breaking up and I headcanon that they don't return together because Vanessa is, in fact, happy with his new dude. She's had enough excitement in her life, thanks. Meanwhile, Wade eventually gets into Logan's pants and heart.
