Re: What tropes are you not a fan of in fandom?

Fluffy incest. I don't have any incest ships currently, but back when I did, I was there for the unhealthy codependency and blurred lines between familial and sexual, and the shame that comes with it. Or even the mutual trauma that come with the relationship actually happening. Incest is midkey a squick for me, and that's why I find the subject fascinating to unpack.

I also just hate setting where the taboo subject of choice is completely normalized and portrayed as a healthy way to exist (ex. incest, underage, etc.). Again, if it's bad in real life, I read it in fiction to explore the ways it is bad.

I think I'm probably extremely weird in that incest doesn't bother me at all as long as it's between siblings or cousins and they're close in age. It's not something I'm personally interested in in real life but in fiction I'm fine with it (and theoretically fine with it if other people do it in real life...I know the common wisdom is that it's pretty much impossible for it to really be consensual, but I find it hard to believe that it's always abusive, and as long as it's not, it's none of my business what other people want to do that doesn't involve me).

Sibling/cousin incest among the same age could still be iffy in real life, because in my experience of being in survivor support groups and unpacking my own trauma, it's often a result of COCSA or a trauma-bond type scenario within an abusive family where it's normalized. (Which is the exact thing I like exploring in fiction.) There are exceptions to the rule IMO, like couples who didn't know they were related until after they got together, or people who are technically related on paper (2nd or 3rd cousins, etc.) but are genetically far apart on the family tree and have never grown up together as actual family.

I never said it couldn't? In fact, I sort of said the opposite. I know that the conventional wisdom is that it ALWAYS is abusive/bad, I'm saying I don't think that's necessarily the case 100% of the time. I think it's possible to be consensual, and if it is, even if those instances are rare, it's not my place to tell people they can't do it because it doesn't affect me in any way.

I never meant to imply you did say that. I agree with you, and was just stating a personal perspective I have about it.

Ahh, okay. Sorry for misunderstanding.

This is something I have been frustrated with in the past. There have been fandoms or pairings that I looked for specifically for the morally gray or dark or fucked up nature, but all I got was weird AUs where parent/child incest was normal and fluffy or something like that.
