Genres you just can't get into...

(Anonymous) 2024-12-14 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Any particular reason why, or is it just not your cup of tea?

Horror. It seems fun but it never holds my interest or attention span for some reason.

Detective shows, I find them all exactly the same as one another and as a result I find them dull and repetitive. The characters they have might be slight different across shows, but for the most part it's all exactly the same archetypes and plots and there's nothing there I find compelling as a result.

Splatter horror. Not into gore. A reasonable amount in appropriate places for a story, cool. But the focus? No thanks.

Mystery/detective genres for the most part. But especially if the person doing the solving is an ordinary person rather than a cop, lawyer, or whatever. Like, I love Poirot but not Miss Marple.

Romance genres of any kind except the erotic kind. And even then, there needs to be a good amount of sex.

I like the casual implication that Miss Marple is a cop.

No? My point is that Poirot is a detective while she doesn't have any sort of job connected to crimes. Just personally I'm not interested in mysteries being solved by random people.

Fantasy. I enjoy Fantasy movies, but books bore me.

Romance. I get annoyed when there is romance in my horror books.

Romance if it's an original story. I can read tons of romance in fic, but watching/reading an original romance story either bores me to tears or gives me so much second hand embarrassment I have to stop.

Romance of any kind. Bleh.

Torture porn stuff like 'Saw' and etc. Nope.

Yeah, with you on the torture porn. Literally cannot watch it.

I used to like romance when I was a teen, and I'll still read shippy fic, but I haven't picked up a romance novel in years. Maybe decades.

Horror. Quite frankly I'm too much of a weenie and too anxious as a person - but this only applies to movies, TV shows, and books. Sit me down with a horror audio drama and I'm as happy as a clam.

Also more of a video game genre, but I cannot do RTS (real time strategy). Most games assume you've memorized the 50 billion keybindings on anything above Easy and will react accordingly. Give me time, dangit. Soulslikes, roguelikes, rogue-lites, etc. also fall in this category, as I just don't want to sink 30 hours into a game dying over and over again before getting passable enough to play it.

Anything that is primarily romance centered. It's just boring to me.

Modern day drama/tragedy movies. I have/see enough of that irl, I don't need to watch additional made up versions.

Most comedies, really, but the one subgenre that I'll never get into is cringe comedy. Hate it so, so much.

Unusually gory horror.
Kids' movies.
practically all anime.
romantic comedies. I find them neither romantic nor funny.
end of the world movies, especially if the writers seem to be intending to put across the message of "everybody else in the world is dead but you're supposed to be relieved that this one family made it!"

Horror. Torture porn. Dystopian stuff.

Westerns. The only movies I can classify as westerns (debatable) that I like are Back to the Future 3 and Blazing Saddles.

I'm not keen on them either except for a few of them, I like Johnny Guitar because it's so weird and campy, Rio Bravo because it's about friendship, and Hateful Eight and Django because Tarantino.
I also like No Country For Old Men a lot but that's more of a noir crime drama with western overtones.

Another one for torture porn/splatter horror. I like horror but I am not into horror as a genre if it makes sense. For me horror is a spice not a main dish. I prefer mystery/detective/comedy etc with horror elements.

Also I don't like romance. That is why I also have trouble with musicals because they are often heavily romance-based in nature. And opera. Same thing. It's just another 'he loves me he loves me not' but in a different singing style. And yes, I read fanfics because I care for this characters and setting.
I don't like most of the period drama or worse period-styled romance (yeah, I am talking about Bridgerton). And I am absolutely not into high-school based plots. Hated them even when I was a high schooler.
