Generally I tend to prefer things with realism, like straight dramas or Earth-based science fiction (like Heroes). This holds for the majority of media formats. As someone who tends to pay a lot of attention to setting, I prefer media in genres that are fairly true to life.

If I was to further distill this, I like journalism or digital media-based drama. This includes movies like Good Night and Good Luck and The Social Network. I really like stories that dive into communication throughout history and among people that live pretty close to contemporary reality.

With all that said, I have been know to shake things up with silly comedies like Airplane! and Beavis and Butt-Head.

see, that's reasonable! you know what you want and don't want. you get yourself. that's wonderful! it's harder to equate with people who think all fantasy is swords-and-sorcery LOTR fantasy, or that all sci-fi is Star Trek. there are nuances and genre-straddling outliers but there's still a basis. Yu know your basis, and it's Realism, and you know how to define what works for you and what doesn't. Lots of genre fans have a hard time with this.
