Well, there is also the whole storyline of Eddington and how Sisko dealt with the Maquis. The thing is, though, in both instances, DS9 doesn't shy away from it. It doesn't pretend Sisko is doing something heroic. Sisko is the type of character who will do what he thinks needs to be done in extreme circumstances, even if it breaks the rules.

It wouldn't be fair to say he does no wrong. But I think this secret goes too far the other way. Sisko is a generally heroic character who sometimes makes choices that are wrong for the right reasons (Moonlight) and sometimes takes things too personally and gets obsessed (Eddington). Doesn't mean he isn't still a hero, though.

i have no onion on whether he's a total rat bastard or a pure innocent angel. i feel like the fandom at large is pretty divided on him TO THIS DAY, which is honestly kind of fun. me no care me just wanna ship him with dukat 🥰

+1, DS9 was very interesting in that it did actually show a captain doing things that were wrong and regretting it. But why Sisko, when he's the one who *did* get those actions examined in text?

Georgiou mining the bodies of the dead Klingons, for example - that's an actual war crime. Also, TNG did in fact examine what the Federation were doing with regards to Bajor, and I only wish they'd followed up in Voyager with the Maquis, but they totally didn't despite the great set-up.
