I agree wholeheartedly. I feel like a Pariah for not liking the Sonic movies. Movie sonic just felt so market research . His personality feels like it was designed to appeal to the youngins too much; he is a hyperactive brat that constantly spews cringey pop culture refrences. almost all the human characters were boring and forgettable. Honestly the throwaway
owl mom was more memorable. The only human character that was funny or likeable was Jimbotnik. He practically carried the entire movie on his back!
Also the Sonic movies have a pretty bad case of protagonist centered mortality ; The plot kicks off when Sonic uses his powers to vause a nationwide blackout in a fit of wangst in a baseball diamond field (despite the fact his owl mom warned him to be careful with his powers). The govt sends an agent (Jimbotnik) to track down the cause of the blackout. The narrative treats jimbotnik as a villain for just doing his job by tracking down the source of the blackout. Jimbotnik had every right to track down and capture sonic : Accident or not any being that can cause a nationwide blackout is a potential threat. If the being can't control it's powers then all the more reason to lock it up. I don't care how cute the being is.

Don't get me started on how Sonic guilt tripped Donut Lord into becoming a fugitive and driving his ass to San Francisco. In other words ,he guilt tripped a man into endangering his own family(being a wanted fugitive isn't safe) just so he could get his worthless ass to San Francisco and get some stupid rings. Why didn't Sonic just get a gps and use his speed to get to San Francisco

Also sonic sent Jimbotnik to die on a an inhospitable , uninhabitable planet (Jimbotnik eventually escaped and returned to earth through the sheer power of his genius. A lesser man would have died) and we were supposed to cheer when he gets banished.

The only reason the narrative presents Sonic in the right is because 1) he's a cute uwu lonely child who just wanted to be wuved🥺 2) he's the protagonist

I loved the OVA (questionable dub voice acting be damned) . It did an amazing job of capturing the spirit of the pre-Dreamcast Sonic games. The characters were entertaining. There were lots of humourous event, though some of them wouldn't fly if it were released today. Not to mention it features one of the coolest incarnations of Metal Sonic

The narrative treats Jimbotnik like a villain because he clearly has ulterior motive and is using the job to achieve it, holy shit. He was never going to just lock Sonic up and go on his merry little way, that was always going to go wrong. Sonic was a fucking kid, of course he's going to have an accident when he's lonely and has been otherwise listening to what his owl mom said, leading to intense isolation.

You sound like one of those people who thinks kids should be mini adults.

I thiiiink the Sonic OAV is my favorite animated Sonic (maybe, I really and genuinely loved the Sonic Boom cartoon, I think it's funny), and a BIG part of that is that it gave us the best Knuckles: HAT KNUCKLES (https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/sonic/images/d/d2/Knuckles_the_echina_and_mole_ova-0.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20191221053642)

Seriously, that hat fucking owns.

Yeah, agreed - the modern Sonic movies aren't bad per se, but they don't really get Sonic quite like the OVA did. Like the other anon said, they scream market research and an overemphasis on references to mask the lack of personality and likability.
