If your genre of choice is shounen, yeah.

I get that shounen tends to be what floats to the top fandom-wise simply because it has a broad appeal, and I mean this in the kindest way possible, but if you don't want to watch children going through it, you need to look for things aimed at adults.

there's plenty of shounen that don't have this problem? simply avoid those with child soldiers

I hope the secret-maker just chose the latest Shounen Jump promo for no reason because it may or may not fit OP's actual taste. Even when shounen trends skew to older teens (questionable, but not children technically). Hunger Games? Now that's some creepy child soldier shit.

that said, Luffy's 19 so.

Luffy immediately jumped out at me too, since he's front and center in the image. I think the average age of the Strawhats is around 30 if you ignore the 50 years Brook spent in the Florian Triangle, which feels wild for some reason.

Oh yeah, I mean Chopper skews the other way because his reindeer age was added to his post-Devil-Fruit age, but with 20 year olds, 30-something Robin, almost-40 Franky, and fish-dad Jinbe, AND they seem to still be younger than most crews. Hearts average upper 20s to mid-30s, Shanks' crew is almost all in their 40s, even the Marines are older except for Koby. It's an adult-heavy shounen no matter who you root for.

I don't know if The Hunger Games is the best example to counter. OP is talking about escapism for kids to imagine being heroes; THG plays the child soldier trope completely straight and it being creepy and awful is the point, not escapism.

The argument I’ve seen is “children are already traumatized and failed by authority figures, so they need stories where traumatized kids at least get to fight back.”

(Anonymous) 2024-12-22 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that was what I came here to say.

And if there were child soldiers but they didn't have trauma, there would be complaints that it's glossing over the fact that being a soldier will almost definitely involve trauma.

I'm sure somewhere on the internet, someone is writing iddy original fiction about kids having entirely age-appropriate experiences that don't make adults uncomfortable or worry about them.

Bluey exists.

That, then.
