Books

What book are you currently reading? or what was the last book you read?

I have started reading The Rage of Dragons.

It is the time of year where I have to read that book. It is a tradition.

Now, altogether now.

Marley was dead, to begin with.

Just read Little People Big Dreams editions for Taylor Swift and Anna Pawlowa before wrapping them, lol. My niece is getting them for Christmas.

I'm kind of sad that she'll be too old for this series soon. I really like the idea of those books and find it fascinating which books resonate with her and which don't.

I gave up on Ghost Story and am now finishing the year with The Ballad of Black Tom.

The Ballad Of Black Tom is on my To Read list. Let us all know how it was when you're finished.

Will do! Not far enough to have an impression yet.

The Ballad of Black Tom is on my list, too! I'm trying to decide whether to read it before the end of the year or save it for next year.

Side note: Is it the Peter Straub Ghost Story? I've had that one for a long time but never got around to reading it. I know I read at least one other book of his and it was...weird. I'm pretty sure it was that book (unless I'm confusing it with something else) that had a gay guy getting together with a woman towards the end, which is just...not great.

It is the Peter Straub story. Honestly....I hated it. I read like 500 out of 1000 pages. It was two slow and there are it jumps from too many characters. I also read his book Julia and found that to be a bit slow but Ghost Story was even worse.

Halfway though, I don't recall any gay characters.

ayrt

Oh, sorry if that was confusing, it was a different book of his with the gay character, I can't remember the name of it. I haven't read Ghost Story, but after the experience with the other book and what you're saying, I don't think I want to.

Yeah, I CAN'T recommend Ghost Story. Life is too short.

The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong. I've just started it so no real opinions yet.

Before that was The Lies of the Ajungo by Moses Ose Utomi. Really interesting little novella and I am eagerly awaiting the sequel to be available at the library.

It was such a pleasant surprise! And I only picked it up because my library had it on a little display out front. I was so excited to read that it is the first in a trilogy and I am hoping the next two books hold up.

Still reading Prey (page 342 of 504) but I am finally off work for a week and will hopefully have my car back from the mechanics on monday woo!

Last book was A Cold Nose for Murder by Jennifer Hawkins. It's the third book in the series and if you like cozy mysteries and a talking corgi, you will enjoy it!

First time or re-reading?

Player of Games

(Anonymous) 2024-12-22 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Just started Player of Games by Ian Banks because of The Culture secrets here on F!s.

It uh, it fucking rules. There's a guy who's just *really* good at playing board games and card games and he's having some angst about feeling unfulfilled. It's like, what if everything but the very tip of maslow's hierarchy of needs was filled in but you still are looking for something? I know plot is going to happen, and I dig the humor, but I just really like how unambiguously cool and nice the Culture is.

Also it's fun to read while I'm hip deep in 40k. Like, it's the DAOT over here absolutely having a blast.

I'm currently reading two. Pray for Him by Tyler Battaglia, which is...okay, I guess, but I'm at 47%, and it's not really what I was expecting, at least so far, but hopefully it'll get better later? I'm intrigued enough to keep reading and find out where it goes, though, so at least that's something, I guess.

And The Lost Story by Meg Shaffer which is really good so far. I have some theories that I'm pretty sure will be wrong, but I have a feeling that whatever happens, I'm going to love it.

Started Mr. Mercedes today, AND one of Ellen Datlow's best horror short story anthologies.

Last book I finished was Mexican Gothic, which I adored.
