I suppose the atraction is that she will loosen him up and make him less pompous. Really, in shipping anything is possible, and it can be cute, although I'm not a massive fan.

An age difference of seven years isn't that much between adults, anyway.

I don't really get it either, although I'd be interested in an explanation from someone who ships it. I have plenty of unusual ships, myself.

I don't really see Edgeworth as definitively gay the way a lot of people do, but meaningful interaction with women are limited, for him, and his most popular het!ships don't really do it for me. I'd read some Edgeworth/Lana or Edgeworth/Iris, though. With Maya, a lot of het fic comes off as skeevy to me because she tends to be portrayed as exceedingly vulnerable; this lessens considerably when she gets aged up some, say AJ-era.

Or maybe I've just seen a little too much creepy Japanese fanart.

I ship them, because I always love the interactions between The Stoic and the Cloud Cuckoo Lander. But it never seemed like a very popular ship to me - I mean, out of 2500 Phoenix Wright fanfics on FF.net only 10 or so are centered on them - so why does it have to be a secret?

I mostly see Edgeworth as gay. I just can't see him with Lana, Franziska, or Ema at all, but somehow I can see him with Maya very easily. I know he's displayed [in my opinion, strictly platonic] affection for Franziska, but the kind of affection he displayed for Maya seemed very different to me. I can't see them as being even close to canon, but I like the dynamic of the ship and the interactions between the two always amused me.

In AA, Gumshoe described Edgeworth as deeply touched (with his lip quivering or something) when Maya made that interruption and got herself thrown out of court for his sake because Phoenix was about to lose the case in 1-4, which I thought was kind of sweet. And in T&T, Edgeworth was clearly extremely concerned when Maya was trapped across the bridge. Those examples are a little lacking, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head right now.

In all seriousness, though, it's okay not to like a pairing, no matter how popular it is (and it's not very; the fandom is slash-dominated, and MitsuMayoi isn't even the most popular het pairing). If I find pairings that I feel are out of character, I just shrug and move along (and I deal with a lot of that since I don't think Nick is gay xD).

Just try to take a more laid back approach, and I think you'll find yourself less bothered by the things that don't interest you.

Edgeworth and Maya are definitely concerned about each other to some degree. In 1-4, Maya was just as invested as Phoenix in helping Edgeworth, even though Edgeworth freaking tried to get her convicted of Mia's murder. Not long afterward, Edgeworth silently paid Maya's bail because he appreciated her help (and was too socially overwhelmed to say, "Hey, thanks" like a normal person would). Edgeworth also helped Phoenix bust down a door in 2-4 when Maya was in danger, and worried in 3-5 about whether Maya would be alright even though everything humanly possible was being done to reach her. These two don't have chemistry in the "homg they totally want to bang each other" way or anything, but it's not the least plausible thing anyone's ever shipped. Plus, y'know, Maya's chipper personality possibly doing Edgeworth some good, and the part where they share a fandom. Easy beginning points.

Doubting he'd get into a relationship with someone a whole 7 years younger? A lot of people's parents have age gaps like that. It's a bit more significant when one person is a teenager, yes, but it's not like being born a few years apart hardwires people's brains so they're completely unable to understand each other.

But hey, if you prefer your Edgeworth 100% gay, he and Maya could always just be amusingly opposite friends.
