Oh man, me too. I quit watching because I just couldn't stand seeing their relationship go to hell -- Clark was turning into a complete asshole, with Lex completely changing as a direct result. It sounds silly, but it just hurt too much. And I don't care that Lex is supposed to be "evil"; it's not as if the series didn't change a lot of canon as it was! They could've gone a different route, and been so much better for it.

Thank God for fanfiction, that's all I'm saying.

I left the show after the first two/three seasons, because I was where it was going to go (depressing angst and betrayal) and I really didn't want that (Hi, SPN). Thankfully, there's some fic floating around, including a well-known massive one, that keep me happy.

Maybe (actually, probably) this is just me being in complete denial because I loved Lex in the earlier seasons but I don't think he became truelly evil.
Clark turned into a tw*t and Lex reacted to that, like I think anyone would. Clark made him the way he was. And even in the later seasons (not gonna say anything in case I spoil it for anyone) everything he did could be easily explained as self-protection and/or everyone misunderstanding his intentions.

I don't care if you're in denial or not, anon, ILU. You make me want to watch the later seasons. And I agree completely. I mean, with "good guys" like the Kents and Lana, how could we not start rooting for Lex?

I stopped watching when Rosenbaum left. I actually held on, even with the 'Veritas' storyline, for only the interaction between him and Tom Wells. That last episdoe, when they are holding each other, broke my heart and I couldn't bear to watch anymore. And yeah, I know he's evil and that he's doomed by canon, but still. That's probably what they were going for... maybe. :(

God, the Kents (Clark and Bo particularly) drove me fucking nuts, I hated them and their judgmental asses. :/ When I realized I'd prefer more Lana than Clark, I knew it was time to let this one go. And that was season five? Four? Ugh, I couldn't stand it.

I understand completely. It's weird cause I've been a Lex Luthor fangirl practically my whole life so I'm perfectly fine with him being a villian. I just didn't want to see it in this canon. I wanted Lex to be redeemed, just once. I wanted him to get to be the hero. It hurt so much to watch it bow to status quo.

I love this secret so hard. I also stopped watching years ago, and sometimes I too still catch the promos or a bit of the show while waiting for Supernatural, and it makes me sad. I don't think it was silly to hope, OP. It could have gone a different route without messing up the canon. At some point I really thought it was going to be Lex doing all the wrong things for the right reasons. The whole Zigit/Naman, 'what if the hero is actually Zigit' thing from Talisman. Lex believing himself to be the (morally grey) hero would've been too awesome for words and completely consistent with canon. I'm still butthurt they messed it up beyong recognition. The moment he finally said the sekrit to happiness was money and power (WTF!?) I was out of there so fast. It just hurt too much to see him twirling his imaginary evol mustache.

I started watching for the pretty and I absolutely love Michael Rosenbaum, and season 1 and 2 I honestly adored the Clark and Lex interactions because you knew the foregone conclusion but were interested in seeing how the show was going to stretch their friendship and how it was going to break. But they went waaaay too far with their breaking up and subsequent enmity; when Lex became evil and Rosenbaum left I was long gone from watching.

His change to "evil" seemed to come out of no where. That's really bugged me.

And the way they just slipped him out of the show made no sense, either.

I am in total denial, living in AU fanfic version of the series, where Lex is somehow redeemed. I stopped watching at season 3, went back to it to catch up in DVD's, and let go at Michael Rosenbaum's last episode. For me, that's where it really ends.
