I have to thank F!S for showing me this game. :)

That said, I'm stupidly protective of Carmen because we have the same name. D:

But I think people don't tend to like her because she does have a very strong, kind of abrasive personality and people like that are hard to get along with in real life as well.

But I don't think any of the girls deserved what happened to them, if we're assuming the darkest case scenario of rape/murder. They were all innocent girls who just got led off their path.

Heh, I came across the game through F!S too. I thought it was fitting that I posted my secret here. ;)

I don't know why I feel so protective of Carmen, really. Maybe it's just seeing so many people assume the wrong thing about her (you see a lot of people calling her a slut or saying she really wants sex when it says right in her bio that she sways her hips and winks "but no more," and she's implied to be more of a romantic than anything), and it's unsettling to see a character that is straightforward and flirty automatically get jumped on for being an idiot or a whore.

I tend not to assume that anyone in the game got raped, even Carmen, or that any of them actually died. The whole game seems incredibly metaphorical to me. But a lot of people do jump to that conclusion, and I absolutely hate the idea that someone CAN "deserve to be raped." Even if someone flirts with a stranger, or says yes and later changes their mind, as soon as they says "no," it's rape if the person doesn't stop and there's no excuse for that. It's skeevy that some people still seem to think that "well, she led me on, she deserves it/I couldn't control myself" could ever be an excuse. Some things may be a dumb move and people should know better.

Not to mention that the person I saw talking about how "she deserved it" was trying to paint the woodcutter as the victim, in a really unsettling way. Saying that she seduced him and that he was "probably a family man" and "imagine how he must be feeling." Um, if you're a family man and you decide to have sex with a girl who's flirting with you, you are not an innocent party in the situation. /slightly off-topic rage

Have you ever played Rule of Rose? The Path reminds me an awful lot of it.

I honestly never got the impression that Carmen was a whore. She's prety blunt and openly flirty, yes, but that doesn't always equal a sex-starved slut. From her bio, I got the impression that she just liked the idea of sex and would probably be horrified during an actual encounter.

Death/rape just seems the most obvious conclusion in an unsettling game like this one, but it's not always right. As you said, the game is very open-ended and metaphorical, and absolutely nothing is set in stone. I prefer seeing it more as a loss of innocence, myself. The girls stray from the well-lit path, find their wolf, and person they were before essentially "dies".

...What? When did it ever say the woodcutter was "a family man"? I have a hard time thinking a true family man would end up as a metaphorical wolf.

If anything. I thought he was kind of a lech.

I haven't played it, but I've heard really good things about it. My friend just recently got it for me as a birthday gift, so I'll probably have to play it soon; it keeps coming recommended!

Yeah, I never got that idea. It seems to me that she's a huge flirt, loves getting attention from men, is kind of smitten with her own sexuality, and is a huge romantic; she thinks she would love one of those whirlwind romances with sudden love and then sex and all.

I do personally think the game is more metaphor than straightforward, and agree that the deaths the girls go through aren't literal deaths. I love coming up with theories, though, even if I don't think some I think up are as compelling as the others. (Like I came up with one that has it literally being a version of Red Riding Hood, with an actual if supernatural "wolf" and the GiW literally being the woodcutter at the end and saving them, which I think is less likely but would still make a neat fic idea.) But I can't say that most theories are wrong, since the creators have basically said it's anything-goes and about whatever the player thinks it's about. |D

It didn't. This guy was basically just assuming that "poor woodcutter, probably a family man"... I guess because he's middle-aged, or somethinng? I didn't get his logic.

I actually like the idea that he was either totally uninterested in the flirting (man, just look at his lack of reaction to her!), or that he was an old family friend. One of the official LJ entries seems to imply that the girls' mother might have been the original Little Red, and it seems odd that Carmen would steal the hat of some random axe-wielding stranger in the woods and get drunk around him. Then, even if you do go with the rape theory, there's the fact that the majority of rape is committed by someone that the victim knows...

One bad thing I can say about Rule of Rose is that the controls are reaaally awkward and can be very offputting, but I did like the story and i LOVE the soundtrack.
