(Helped that I didn't have to deal with an entire book-within-a-book where all the female characters were sex workers, I bet. And I adore Anamnesis ~ The Perpetual Train, but, yeah.)

You mean the novel-length flashback about Judah's past? I loved that. Hell, I love Judah. In all the thousands of books, shows, and movies I've read/seen in my life, I've found 3 characters who are ME in a flawless and essential way -- he is one.
And the whores thing? Well, TECHNICALLY, not all the female characters were whores -- some were Remade. But being a whore isn't something that is derogatory here, in this context. It's also, as I understand it, a relatively accurate portrayal of US Western expansion -- many, if not MOST of the women present in the West while the rails were being built were involved in the sex trade.
