Movies That You like But Never Gets Mentioned

Is there a movie that you like a lot, but mostly people are probably unaware of or have forgotten about when it had been big on its release date?

Lone Star State of Mind. It is an absolutely hilarious movie that possibly only my family has seen.

Purgatory (1999). I found it on a VHS tape that was thrown out from the recently closed Blockbusters and I always think about it.
It's a Western-fantasy movie about cowboys who end up in purgatory waiting to go to heaven or hell depending on how they act in the purgatory town they're living in.

Flight of Dragons. It is so hard to locate a copy of it though.

I don't think it ever got a legit streaming release. I love that campy fantasy movie though.

Event Horizon only gets mentioned occasionally when we have people listing favorite horror movies. It is so, so good.

So I Married an Axe Murderer. I'm not the biggest romcom fan and it's definitely on the odder side of humor, but i still think about several moments from that movie.

There is a generation of people where this seemed to be their favorite movie. But you're right that I haven't seen it mentioned much as of late.

I love that movie so much even if it does have some icky 80's relationship stuff going on.

Pacific Rim. It's still easily recognized in fandom, which adds to the whiplash of mentioning it to someone who isn't in fandom.

Welcome to the Space Show. It's a ridiculous, fun sci-fi anime adventure about a bunch of kids and a talking dog alien thwarting evil plans and exploring the galaxy while they do it. It's never brought up when talking about anime movies, but the animation is gorgeous, the scenery inventive, and it's just plain fun - it believes in itself so hard you can't help but love it.

Never heard of it but I just looked up a trailer amd it looks fun! Going to add it to my list of things to watch.

The Gnomemobile

It is a weird older Disney movie that I loved as a kid. That and Darby O'Gill and the Little People, but that one was more a love/hate because it had scenes that terrified me as a kid. But a very young and dashing Sean Connery!

It was never big, but Zathura is my underrated fave. It has everything: realistic kid characters, tropey space adventures, a good story, and proof Kristen Stewart can act.

Stage Beauty, an adaptation of the play Compleat Female Stage Beauty, a fictionalized account of Charles II banning men from playing women onstage, and how that affected one of the last men to play Shakespearian women on the Restoration stage, and his dresser, who yearns to act onstage.

I Am Dragon, an adaptation of I think a Russian fantasy novel about a dragon shapeshifter and one of the women sacrificed to him. Wish I could find the book (I think the literal translation of the title is The Ritual?) in English.

Penelope, a fantasy romcom which stars Christina Ricci as a rich girl whose parents shut her away because she was born cursed with a pig snout.

Looked up I am Dragon. According to Russian wiki the original novel, which is indeed called the Ritual, was translated to Polish, Ukranian and Chezh. So I assume there is no English translation. I guess tough luck, I am sorry.

Also seconding Penelope. I don't like romcoms bit this one is quite lovely

Young Sherlock Holmes - Take Sherlock Holmes and Watson, make them teens, set it in an English boarding school (during Victorian times), add a splash of Goonies adventurousness, thrown in a good dollop of Indiana Jones action, and last, but not least, drop in an ancient Egyptian cult, then put it in a blender, and the game is afoot!

Chris Columbus, who wrote the screenplay, totally borrowed some of the aesthetic for his Harry Potter movies.
