Reading Challenges and/or Goals

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Happy New Year! Do you like to make yearly goals or do a reading challenge or reading bingo etc?

25

I am going to aim for 25 books read this year. Last year was 24 and I managed it so I figure adding one more can't be too hard and I like the symmetry.

I've thought of a bingo or a challenge but I get real contrary about the most random things and I could see it popping up with something like this. I'm definitely a "mood reader" - aka I read whatever I am in the mood for - rather than a going down a list reader type.

Every time I've tried I fail. So I've started making easier goals for myself.

The first challenge I made for myself was 5 books in a year. I absolutely understand and support smaller easier goals. I believe strongly in not setting yourself up for disappointment and instead making smaller goals you can meet and build yourself up with.

I make yearly reading goals and then just read whatever.

Same. I think all the challenges look fun and enjoy reading other people enjoying them, but they are not for me.

Happy New Year!
I try to do 50 books a year - it gives me enough flexibility to try new things and have room for genres and books I know I'll like.

I'm super picky about books and will drop stuff for the most minute reasons, so those challenge lists that float around this time of year never really appeal to me.

Big same about being picky. Life is too short to waste on books I'm not 100% into.

Also love the doctor icon!

I tried a challenge in 23 and it was miserable. I’m much happier just reading what I want, when I want. I read every night but I don’t know how many books I read a year so this year I’m keeping track on StoryGraph.

I did! I aimed for 75 and got to uh... 119 I think?

So I am aiming for 100 this year. I finished my first book of the year just now, though to be fair I was 100 pages in already. Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes and it was so gooood.

For anon that liked Event Horizon you might like it.

I usually aim at 10 books a year. Not much, but it's a feasible goal to me and I usually read way more books. I don't count non-fiction books in the goal (that I read for work and/or personal pleasure) and read way too much fanfiction, so my actual total reading time is very high, but I need to remind myself to read more novels and less... junk.

I'm not super fussed about hitting every square in my reading bingo. I'd love to average out to reading a book a week! The thing is, there are times when I can read a book in a day (though I tend to need a day off before starting a new one in those cases because I'm Digesting it)-- so I think that even though I know I hit a reading slump every summer, I can make up for it during the cold months when I'm just speeding through reading two to three a week.

I don't have a challenge or a goal related to reading, but I do want to add (diverse) children's books to at least five Little Free Libraries this year.

I don't really do a challenge, but I do keep a book journal (ever since 2015) to write down what I've read in that year. It takes the pressure off of potentially failing my goal and feels satisfying writing down lists of books that I have read.

Last year I technically read 5 books, but it adds up to 31 if I include graphic novels and manga that I had borrowed from the library.
