oh god I need the midwestern states to all do "don't be polite, be predictable" PSA campaigns. we've had a huge upsurge in people thinking that slamming on their brakes in the middle of traffic if they even glimpse a bike or pedestrian approaching a sidewalk is polite, when it's both illegal (in this state) and hugely dangerous. all the bike paths have stop signs for the bikes to obey, they have to wait to cross like any car, but cars will just stop dead to be "polite." I've stopped biking inside the city because of this, it's just not safe.

at the same time I've almost been hit crossing using a blinking pedestrian crossing alert because drivers don't even notice flashing signs, so damned if I do, damned if I don't.
