It's really only some of my friends/acquaintances with kids. Half of my friends, oddly enough the ones with daughters, now that I'm thinking about it, get their kids to bring books, coloring, or their dolls to dinner to entertain themselves. But I have one friend who doesn't even give her son the chance to try going screenless. He walks into the restaurant glued to a tablet and stays that way the entire time, freaking out on his mom if the battery gets low or the game isn't "working right". Even when myself or other adults ask him about his siblings, or his baseball team, or favorite movies, he ignores us. He even ignores his mom when she's trying to get what he wants to eat out of him. I've known her for a long time. She's never said he has any serious issues, so I wonder if it's just easier for her to use that tablet instead of discipline or instruction. Yes, plenty of kids have special circumstances, but I think it's naive to say every kid does and every kid should be glued to a screen all the time.
