I mean, I definitely use the slave labor argument, because I get really tired of people making empty gestures. You post stuff with #LandBack, and talk about decolonization, but...you're a white person who owns property on formerly Native land, with no intent on ever relinquishing it to a Native person? You support reparations for slavery, and think the US is forever tainted by it, but...you eat fish that was caught by modern day slaves; and use devices and vehicles powered by a mineral extracted by modern day slaves, typically children (and typically Black!)?

It's all just talk to make people feel good about themselves. Changing the world for the better takes actual sacrifice, which almost no one wants to make.

And yes, I am currently using a device with a lithium battery in it, which means I've contributed to the problem. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when it dies, as now that I know how it's made, I do feel genuine discomfort over it. Maybe I'll find a refurbished phone or something, so I'll at least know that no additional cobalt has been mined on my behalf.

SE7EN Anon.
The "problem" with this argument is that now we need things like cars and phones and the internet to function. Like literally _function_. And it unfortunately falls into the No Ethical Consumption Under Capitalism problem.

We don't NEED Harry Potter.

People have always argued that we need exploitation to exist in order to function. The people who benefit from exploitation always, always argue that there's no other way, or that it's too hard to make any meaningful changes.

No Ethnical Consumption Under Capitalism is a convenient excuse, particularly given that we're completely unwilling to really do anything about the capitalism that we claim to abhor. Choosing not to purchase or consume media is an easy way to assuage one's personal guilt, but it doesn't do a damn thing. At the end of the day, it's still the case that we'd rather there be slavery, that we'd rather children die for us, than to have to give up our first world comforts.
