I've never met anyone physically repulsed by any genre tbh

Either way, it sucks to not be into what's popular, my sympathies OP

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen the physically repulsed by a genre thing a few times now in FS and wondering if physically repulsed is the new trend to describe a general dislike?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe? I dunno. I've seen people say they're physically repulsed by mpreg or something but that's more a single idea, not a genre?

Repulsed by a whole entire genre covers a lot of things, since there's such broad variety within genres

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Same OP maybe?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Humorous hyperbole maybe, like people describing themselves screaming and crying over a particularly touching moment?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-03 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
That could be.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-03 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed that's what OP meant.

I mean, I'm physically repulsed by torture porn horror movies.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-03 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that broad enough to be a 'genre'? Horror is the genre, torture porn is the trope

...Jet Set Radio. Th... The game with the skateboarding mummies. Realistic???? The same game that has a weirdo alien thing that's a weirdo copy of one of the playable characters??? This is REALISTIC to you???

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Same issue with Max Payne, Twisted Metal, and Saints Row. None of those are realistic.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
They could all be labeled a type of fantasy.

I love sci-fi but I loathe most fantasy. I also find it boring, especially high or epic fantasy.

Not sure I would go so far as to say physically repulsed, but if you had something like Lord of the Rings and asked me to watch it (or read it), I feel like my brain would probably bleed out of my skull just thinking about how boring and tedious it would be to get through lol

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I'm a longtime SciFi fan but I strongly dislike most stereotypical fantasy (think lord of the rings. *Snore*) especially High fantasy. I mainly dislike the Medieval European Fantasy. It's so overdone. The legend of Zelda was one of the very few Medival European Fantasies I ever liked. And Zelda wasn't even that much of a Medieval European Fantasy (particular in later games. It has a bit of a unique flavour)

Though I like mythology/fantasy based on other cultures. I'm a sucker for Asian fantasy. I really liked Jade Empire.

I think the worst of it can be summed up as “Dragon Quest fantasy.” E.g. almost every isekai feels like it takes place in off-brand Dragon Quest.

I don't mind high fantasy (though it's not my favourite) but I do feel repulsed by reality TV.

And bro country music. Vom.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it really that unpopular outside of fandom/geeky spaces to not be into fantastical settings? My older sister also dislikes most fantasy/sci-fi, with most people I know outside of online also preferring realism/mundane/real-life/etc.

I think you just need to find your crowd.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the same. I find a lot more people who give me strange looks for reading sff than those that into it.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, honestly it just sounds like OP has discovered they're not a big fan of high fantasy/hard sci-fi and doesn't quite know what words to use to find what they do like. No shade there.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
The 'slightly' in 'slightly more realistic settings' is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

Hitman is lite sci-fi; Max Payne, Saints Row and GTA are about as realistic as your average urban fantasy; and, let's be honest, Jet Set Radio and Ridge Racer aren't exactly story-driven games and the backdrop of JSR is basically wannabe cyberpunk that refused to commit. Twisted Metal is a weird one because, really, the storyline is as much weird fantasy nonsense as your average beat 'em up (and I'm including Tekken and Mortal Kombat in this) and the gameplay is ... just driving with Added Bullshit.

It's all fantasy, all of it.

Fantasy doesn't have to have dragons, sci-fi doesn't have to have space ships and you don't have to justify not liking those things just don't act like you're 'above it all'. Nobody cares. Loads of people don't like Sci-fi and fantasy. It's why they were considered uncool and nerdy for decades.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-03 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
+1 to "it's all fantasy." a modern street setting doesn't mean it isn't fantasy, any more than a sword and a castle means it is (it could be historical non-fantasy!). few fiction genres short of straight up crime mystery and romance contain zero fantasy-derived elements, and even then there's an awful lot of books and shows where a fantasy element slips in anyway.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-03 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, when they said "slightly more realistic," that was not the list of things that I expected to follow that phrase because NONE of them are very realistic at all.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-03 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
There's a lot of people who don't like SFF, but I get how it seems like the opposite in fandom spaces! But even in fandom there's plenty of presence for other genres like crime or romance or historical.
