Whenever I am imagining running away and being a world/timehopping adventurer, I admit I gloss over reality and like to just imagine I am healthy and will stay healthy (and don't get periods or need glasses etc etc etc).

Personally I've always been a buzzkill about this. Even when I was a kid reading Inkheart or whatever I was like. Why the fuck would anyone want to live in a world without indoor plumbing and modern medicine. Couldn't be me.

Have seen people ask the question, if you could live in any fictional setting, what would you pick? And tbh I think anyone who doesn't choose like, the Culture or something similar, is just kinda an idiot.

I would love to travel to the past if traveling back was guaranteed and easy to do. You could just zap forward if you needed a dentist or whatever.

It would be great to be a historian and be able to do this. So cool.

Anon if you haven’t read any of the Connie Willis books i highly recommend them, because that is their exact conceit.

In a world with magic, I figure magic just takes care of all that stuff instead of technology. Otherwise I agree, though.

That being said, I think the Star Trek universe is still the one I'd pick to live in.

>I do live in a country with universal healthcare.

Ha, when I read this part I kinda understood why I don't relate to this secret. I know the world has gotten better with medical advancements and civil rights, but even if I'm only in my early 30s I have to actively fight myself to stop fantasizing about time traveling to at least a few decades in the past. I guess if anything I wish I was an adult back when it was easier to move out and live alone. The lifestyle my parents had in their 20s in the 70s-80s is something I can only dream of now. I know, realistically, it would suck if my 33 year old self just went to 1985 instead of 2025 as a queer and mentally ill person, but at least I'd be able to have groceries take up half my paycheck.

I hate to break it to you, but just because groceries were cheaper doesn't mean everything was.

In 1985 I was in school and making $3.35 an hour, and jeans still cost about $30.

In the early 90s I made $16k a year, lived in a different city than my boyfriend and routinely had ridiculously high ($150) phone bills. It cost the same to heat my apartment as it does monthly to heat my house now that's 3x the size.

I was using groceries as an example off the top of my head. I'm aware it wasn't easy decades ago, my mother still grew up poor.

Slightly along the same lines, I was born in the mid-80s so I imagine I'm looking through rose tinted glasses, but I would love to experience the 1990s (especially in major cities) as an adult. Start of the 90s would be rough but I would love to experience basically 1996-1999.

LOL When I want to be absorbed into a fantasy story where I can just focus on the adventures, I don't think about the logistics XD

But realistically, I have thought about if I were to go to 1800s France to enjoy a lavish party in Versailles, or enjoy a flapper's nightlife in 1920s NYC, yuuuuuck.
The air would smell like shit and piss DX
If we think the rodent issues are bad now...
If I hate walking places now....LOL
