I saw Stanley Kubrick's Shining movie before I read King's novel.

I was surprised by how much was left out, then realized a lot of what was left out wouldn't translate easily to movie narrative, and then came to accept both on their own terms (though they really should have revived the "Inspired By" credit for the Kubrick film!).

Stephen King himself said something to the effect that "it's a very good horror movie that has nothing to do with my book"
