The Neverending Story movie does have some really good moments that I appreciate -- it's got a nice dark tone for a kids movie, the rock muncher scene (that's not in the book) is genuinely affecting, the Gmork scene freaked me out as a kid and I just like the visual of the world being slowly consumed by the Nothing. But the movie totally whiffs the ending and obviously skipping the entire second half of the book (where all the actual important thematic stuff is) is where it falls apart. I still have some fondness for the movie but I'll take the book over it any day, though I do kinda hope with the current nostalgia-bait culture we might get a proper adaptation some day.

(As an aside, I was unironically in love with Gmork after reading the book.)
