Fic Help: Americans Wanted.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-04 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I need American FSers to weigh in here.

I am writing a scene where a non American character goes to a gun shop to buy their first rifle for general hunting purposes. I need to know what would be a good simple rifle with easy maintenance suitable for a newbie that a reliable gun merchant might sell, but also a bells and whistles diva rifle that an unscrupulous one might try to sell too, and the differences between them both. Era is about twenty years ago/turn of the millennium and area is Michigan upper peninsula/Wisconsin region if that makes a difference. As a non American in a mainly gunfree country, I could use input.
TIA

I was all excited to be able to help, and then disappointed that I know probably about as much as you about guns and buying guns lol I'm curious if we have gun enthusiasts on FS that can answer you.

This community is usually pretty good on fanfic research, so I am hopeful. If not knowing themselves, could someone post the ask to an appropriate bit of reddit? I know we used to have a user who would post questions to reddit for people if you did not have reddit account/want to use your reddit account for whatever reason, yourself. Are you still around reddit anon? Please?

Oh I didn't know about that anon, that is so helpful!

Yeah, fanfic writers (and writers in general) always have all sorts of random helpful knowledge, so hopefully someone here can help!

American, but not knowledgeable about guns. But I know enough to suggest that it probably matters what your character is hunting - there's going to be a world of difference in hunting squirrel/rabbit vs. deer vs. bear.

Definitely not bear or wolf. Coyote, maybe, but turkey and/or deer is what I think of when I think of general hunting in the upper midwest.

One thing you may want to keep in mind, OP, is that there are laws about non-residents of the United States buying guns while in the US. I'm not super experienced about that, and given their location I don't think it'd be a big issue, but something to keep in mind.

Savage and Winchester are both pretty good beginner/middle of the road rifle companies. You'll want a relatively large caliber - .30-06, .380, or .357 will do the job for most medium sized game, which deer fall under.
Henry is the brand to use for rich, flaunt it in your face, high quality rifles.

For deer, these are some good starter rifles. The Savage is a cheaper model.

For turkey, you would be more likely to use a shotgun.

I'm fascinated to see your story when it's done, I've lived in WI all my life and I don't know guns but I do know hunting. Turkey and waterfowl are def more likely a shotgun but deer is either bow or rifle, so there won't be one gun for all game.

Don't forget the waiting period laws! The Brady Bill was in effect in '00 but state laws regarding background checks, etc, I don't know. That should at least be an easy google, but you do want to include that if it affects your plot timeline (how many days they need to wait to have the gun in hand).
