nerf - verb, (slang) to water down, dumb down or especially weaken, particularly in video games.

Wild to me someone wouldn't know this, but maybe it's specific to video game circles? It's been around forever.

The lack of that knowledge could be subculture specific, to whatever subculture you belong to. That is possible too.
