I didn't watch the movie and can't comment on Sonic's personality in that.

I did watch the animated tv show and played the video game, and in those, I really liked that the writers didn't seem to make any effort to make Sonic moral or likeable. If you wanted a main character who was a good boy who deserved to have good things happen to him, you watched someone else. But I mostly avoided American media aimed at kids, as a kid, because the goody-two-shoes ways of protagonist characters got on my nerves all the time. In light of that, Japanese media in general and Sonic in particular were a breath of fresh air.

When I compare him with older media, he reminds me of the character premise of the roadrunner, except that Sonic can talk.
