Same same same same same.

I wish I had some solid advice, I really do. But... well, same.

What's a detail in a book or show that you missed? And do you think it was kept intentionally vague, or did you just miss it?

Lotta people in LA who bitched about "the homeless" about to find out just how little of a choice or moral failing it is to be homeless, and how hard it is to become housed again. And they are gonna go on the internet and complain about assumptions on homelessness, expecting people to listen to them as if they weren't filthy shiftless feckless homeless people. I'm anticipating a lot of schadenfreude over this.

It is like the COVID long haulers who used to be the people complaining about the shiftless, feckless, lazy bums on sickness benefits, but as soon as they got long covid they expected everyone to listen to them about what sickness benefit life was really like. Then they found out nobody was listening to them, because they were no longer nice privileged middle class working folk, just bums on benefits. God, that was a hilarious thing to watch.

This is gonna be gud. Always nice to see the middle class get broken like this.

I mean, isn't that a good thing? She read as a woman to you and you never had a reason to question it. It seems to me that that would be an example of good trans rep - a trans character who exists and is trans and it's never made a big deal of.

I think you're allowed to have been a bit ignorant, you were seven.

Plenty of adults don't know much about epilepsy. I'm in my late 30s and, at work, we once got a manager with epilepsy. He went through the whole thing with it and asked what we should do if he had a seizure at work.

I was the only person who didn't give a "stupid" answer to any question.

Other answers included holding his tongue down so he doesn't swallow it (good way to get your fingers bitten off, also you cannot swallow your tongue), hold it down with a spoon (good way to break his teeth), hold him still while he seizes, etc etc. None of these are really stupid answers, but they speak of a lack of education on the subject.

I knew all the right answers (make sure he can't hit himself on anything, move things from around him, put him in the recovery position when he's stopped, call an ambulance, don't be offended or weirded out by anything he might say in the postictal state) ... why? Because my grandmother was epileptic. It was a risk for me growing up. People without exposure to that just don't know about what you do, what happens, what to expect. Whole-ass adults. My youngest colleague at that time was 23, the oldest is older than me.

Nobody could possibly consider a seven year old kid stupid for misconstruing a book. You've got no reason to feel any shame, OP.

I wonder if kids whose parents shelter them from the existence of say, gay people for example, think gayness is just some fictional fantasy thing when/if they were to stumble upon a book about growing up gay

I did, LOL.

I was with you until that last sentence. There isn't much of a middle class any more, just working class that is being sold a fantasy, so that kind of schadenfreude isn't very class solidarity.

But yes, there are so many people who try to deny that they could ever be homeless by making homelessness a moral failing: Homeless people are obviously Bad and I am Good therefore I can never be homeless. It's always is nice to see those kinds of people actually face it. Time to learn empathy the hard way.

Totally agree. I really dislike Elliot and think Barba would be so much better for her...I hate the way things ended with them.

But honestly, these days I'm way more invested in Rollins and Carisi and don't really care about Olivia's love life. Outside of Barba, I always liked her interactions with Trevor Langan/her RL husband...just anyone but Elliot Stabler, honestly.

I’d love to hear more if you feel like sharing.

Was it actually gayness or something similar? What book(s) did you read about it? Were there particular misconceptions you developed?
