Is this a “newcomers to the fandom are unknowingly retreading well-worn ground” sort of thing?

I don't think so. Most NFL newcomers tend to not focus on ref stuff, at least not right away. (There are some exceptions, but we exceptions tend to be true weirdos. I should know. If I could turn back time, I'd start working on becoming a football ref way earlier.)

I know nothing about American football but this is definitely a sports fandom thing the world over. Presumably the team in the secret is doing well and then suddenly it's a big conspiracy! The refs are in on it!

if you're looking to social media for sane takes on football, that's a you problem.

I went to school in Green Bay in the 90s. I know from stupid football fandom. I lived it. I knew Ken Reuttgers and Beebe and a few others personally. It's never as deep as anyone in media would make it. Social media is even stupider. Just don't go there. Don't. That way lies stupidity, even more stupidity than the guy in the bar on a Sunday afternoon.

Strangely, American football Instagram can be pretty entertaining, which is why I hang out there in the colder months. I've found a fair number of accounts that don't take themselves too seriously, so seeing this ref stuff gets to be a bit more jarring than average.

Wow, I sincerely congratulate you on finding the least weird part of football fandom. Not taking themselves seriously is the only way to go, serious football is weird and unpleasant and no amount of recognizing it will actually mitigate it.

The city of Green Bay btw does in fact own the Packers and benefits greatly from all tourist action in the area, unlike the billionaires who own most teams. So if you're going to root for anyone, root for the Packers, in the hopes that it will sustain a very small city that has nothing else going for it and entire neighborhoods that haven't changed in 30 years.

I recently found a meme of the Vikings' plane with the text "The only touchdown the Vikings had in Detroit". I had a hearty chuckle at that one.

I am pretty sure 90% of fans "think" the refs are "favoring the other team" at any given moment
