I suspect they would've kept it to themselves as long as the other people had no influence over the canon.

Otherwise... we all have something we dislike about others' interpretations of characters we love (at least for some of them). Fanfiction is one thing, but outright disregarding or exaggerating canon itself (in the context of discussing/handling canon) is another.

As for calling others nerds... well, yeah. We're all nerds and we all need to check ourselves at times.
