There were shades of this in the original, but it should be pointed out that in the original, it's only because of the intervention of one of the fairies that Princess Aurora only falls asleep when she pricks her finger on the spinning wheel, rather than dying like Maleficent hoped. And it's with help from the fairies that the Prince is able to fight his way through all the giant thorns and defeat Maleficent.

But then again, I consider the Maleficent films to be pointless like every Disney live-action movies. Let Maleficent just be a stylish, dramatic over-the-top bastard! We don't need to know her backstory; it's more fun to make one for yourself, rather than have it spoon-fed to you.

In fact, I'm a little annoyed by how everyone keeps trying to give their villains traumatic backstories or make them well-intentioned extremists. Can't we have some over-the-top dramatic bad-to-the-bone bastard-coated bastards with bastard fillings?

I don't say every villain needs to be a stylish bastard-coated bastard, but I just feel like so many recent fictional villains are so milquetoast and dull.

hate to be that person but you can probably blame Wicked for all those villain-backstory movies

Eh, Wicked was already far from original even when it came out, it wasn't at all the first story to do this. I resent Wicked because the author is kind of a dick but he wasn't that original.
