the answer is perhaps that, as a species, we simply do not deserve nice things <- depressed

but as a serious answer, perhaps the people in charge of our fates are all just fuckin stupid and that's the problem... but how does one fix it? or at least not be depressed about it- is it still possible for a leftist to be realistically hopeful?

I've got some bad news for you, OP: it was representative of that before, too. It's just that it was only someone else's government then, so you didn't care.

TikTok has always had issues, but you know what? It's their playground. They built it so they could make whatever rules they wanted. It's always been up to users to decide if they want to follow those rules or walk away. Those who chose to stay made allowances and built communities and livelihoods. What the American government did was all about abusing its power in the most despotic way imaginable and taking what someone else built to control and silence us. It was naked theft and corruption on a profound level.

The two situations are not the same.

When a third space in real life gets shut down because it's breaking the law or isn't up to code, is that the government trying to control and silence its patrons? If a popular neighborhood bar gets shut down because it keeps serving alcohol to underage people, is that evidence of government corruption? A community has formed there, and it represents the livelihoods of the people who work there. But few would argue that this means it must be allowed to stay open.

A space or platform doesn't have the right to exist simply because people use it to gather, talk to each other, and make a living. And the company running TikTok has purposely flouted US regulations, particularly regarding CSAM. As for despotism, there is a good reason why TikTok is specifically aimed at Western teenagers rather than Chinese ones, and it's not that China is a magical place full of puppies, rainbows, and unfettered freedom.

DA

substantive response!

yeah, TikTok can go fuck itself, but I do think it's lower on the list of priorities than, oh, everygoddamnthing else Congress has failed to fix in the past ever, so.
