While the message was delivered rudely, it does make a good point. Sure, you could stop listening to the music. And then what?

Besides, even if someone used those services and suddenly stopped listening to one artist, the difference would be trivial at best, if even noticeable.

Correct, artists literally get paid pennies from Spotify. Weird Al did a special performance for them and later made a video thanking them for the $12 stream payment.

Dropping an artist from your playlist is about the activist equivalent of recycling a single plastic bag.
