Book clubs

Just curious if any of y'all have been in bookclubs before? Online or off?

I'm in my first one - mostly joined because a friend started it and I wanted to support their efforts. It's been interesting. We meet every other month or so (the goal was once a month but we are all busy so it sometimes gets pushed out). The actual 'book discussion' part has been kind of lackluster from my POV. It's more of "I liked it" or "didn't care for it" and then move on.

The classics thread got me curious about different types of bookclubs. The one I'm in is what I think of as the 'standard' type - someone picks a book and we all read it and then get together to chat. I think it could be fun to do a 'variety' bookclub where you just get together once a month or so and just discuss whatever book each person last read. Or a 'goals' bookclub where you all bring together your TBR goals (like the classics thread), pick a book from someone's list and read that.

Aww but I love that. My siblings and I definitely talk books but it's sporadic and we don't always read the same stuff.

We actually picked out the book together at the store!

I tried to partake in the one here years ago but none of the books were really my thing. A couple interested me but I had trouble sourcing them. One I had to order from across the world and it showed up months later. I read it and went back to view the discussion just to take in other perspectives on it.
I’ve tried to find one that would suit me either locally or online but so far no luck. I really dislike most of the book fare which tends to be either Milquetoast American Woman or Loving Jane Austen is My Only Personality Trait. I would love to find an online book club for fantasy, progression fantasy, litRPG, urban fantasy, or sci-fi.

I've never been to one and I don't read enough to start. But I am advertising at my job a small paid book club. (They have professional person who is leading discussions and this club seems pretty cool)

I used to belong to a book club back in the 90's, I enjoyed it.

Our family did a bok club during COVID lockdowns. We set weekly reading goals, then discussed over Sunday dinner. It was really fun, because we all have different tastes and everyone got to choose books to read. Some took two weeks, some took four or five, but the discussions were wide-ranging and interesting. It also helped with our shift from parents/kids to related adults having a good time together.
Before that I was in a book club run by the local library. I didn’t enjoy it, because most of the people were there to be seen. The one or two who took it seriously were fascinating and I learned a lot from them.
I really think it depends on the moderator of the club, tbh.
