Does it matter, though? We've seen public figures build themselves a persona and turn out to be awful behind that. At some point you're just taking it on faith that they're a decent person.

The need to know literally anything about the actors behind the characters is just super fucking weird to me and I think people like you are entitled and parasocial. It isn’t uncommon at all though, unfortunately. It’s been in practice long enough that everything coming out of modern Hollywood now is bland.

Nah, I can never agree after the trend of asking young female celebrities if they're feminists. This was at a time when even well-meaning people who would identify as feminists if they knew what it really meant, said "No, I don't hate men" because you'd only know that hating men wasn't a requirement for being a feminist if you had actively looked into feminist advocacy. You could not have expected these women to say they didn't have enough knowledge to answer the question, because /they thought they did./ And the reporters knew that. It was a great way to keep the belief alive that feminism is about hate and good women aren't feminists. And the same tactic can be weaponized at celebrities with any misunderstood topic by people hoping to push a narrative.

Of course that's not so much about the celebrities' feelings as the fact that they are influential and fallible, and good reporters should take care not to exploit that by accident.

Yeah, no. If they were donating to bigoted or conservative orgs that's one thing, but hounding anyone to give an opinion on hot button topics is stupid in general. Most celebrities use public personas, so they can easily lie in public and say the opposite in private. I don't understand how we went from mocking people who expect praise for doing the bare minimum like supporting LGBT rights or BLM, to demanding public statements.

I've always really disliked the idea present in those last lines: that if someone is in the public eye, then they can be treated however we like. And the more money they've made off being in the public eye, the less bad we should feel about it.

Their job may be to entertain us, but that doesn't mean they stop being human beings. And I don't think it's a good sign when someone seeks reasons to deny the humanity of others.

I am so sick of my parents insisting I'm straight - dumb rant

So, I'm aroace. (Disclaimer: I know there's plenty of debate about whether it falls under the larger LGBTQ+ umbrella, some people say it does and some people say it doesn't. I'm not trying to get into that debate.)

The issue is that my parents know this, yet still insist that I'm straight. Whether it's LGBTQ+ or not, I'm definitely not straight since that kind of by definition involves some level of sexual or romantic interest in the opposite sex and I have zero interest in anyone.

But according to my parents, straight is the default and if you're not currently dating (or at least trying to find someone to date) of the same sex, you're straight.

I know in the grand scheme of things this is really a minor "problem" to have but it's still really annoying and frustrating.
