You're right, tits and a cute smile don't count as characterization. Now, what does this have to do with Yoko, again? I don't even know where to start with this, because Yoko has so much characterization that if you missed that it exists altogether...I'm not even sure how that's possible.

Giving her a bunch of unrelated fanservice traits such as "being motherly", "kinda tsundere" and "responsible" isn't writing her with an actual human personality; that's not how people function. Yoko, as a character, works like a mascot robot with pre-programmed sterotypical responses.

Having character traits doesn't make her a character, it makes her fetish fuel. That. I. I never finished watching TTGL, but honestly, how does this reasoning even... like. What. Maybe they did a bad job with Yoko, IDK, but seriously, a character displaying those tropes does not make her a 'mascot robot with pre-programmed stereotypical responses'. Weirdly enough, real people have traits like that, too. Shocking, I know. But there are motherly, slightly tsundere-ish and responsible people in the world. Are you seriously going to tell me that they're robots?

Why would that be bad? That's the entire point of her character: looking good and being easily recognizable.

Eh, I like GB fics/fanart if they're done well, with due respect to maintaining the characters' canon personalities and style. It's usually fun and interesting to see how characters change when gender roles are swapped. (Would a cocksure/bullshit artist/maverick like Kirk have been as successful or popular if he'd been a woman all along? Would his life experiences have been the same or vastly different? How would the rest of the crew behave if they were all flipped? Or if only some of them were? Would guy!Spock find girl!Kirk ever more "fascinating"? Would she!Spock be she!Kirk's BFF? Would guy!Bones find them both insufferable bitches? Etc.) It's a plot device rife for character analysis, and usually pretty clever or funny.

Also, as far as NOT CLEARLY LABELING IT AU - that depends on the plot device the writer's using, doesn't it? Maybe it's not an AU. Crazy sex-change beams and alien mind swaps are pretty standard stuff in sci fi, after all, especially Star Trek.

Go watch everything after episode 8 and get back to us on that.
