Good point. And maybe I exaggerated. When I made this secret (which was a while ago) I think I was simply overwhelmed by the prospect of all the het parings I had never taken into account before, leaving the slash less uninteresting. I've calmed down and see then as equally interesting now. Of course it's the character's chemistry that makes a ship.

One of those secrets that you slightly regret after a little while, I guess. Oh well.

Eh, yeah, I've posted some secrets like that. Maybe you were just watching and shipping things that didn't have strong het pairings to get behind? Star Trek, Supernatural, etc, are all kind of like that. Don't feel like you have to go back and look for all the het pairings you missed, just watch things more open-mindedly in the future (and obviously there was at least one het pairing that grabbed you enough to ship it so you're already doing it.)

Also, how much does it suck that that show got canceled. So effing much.

The american version of LoM you mean? From what I heard it was the biggest pile of crap this year - the ending was as literal as you can get!

They got canned and had to recut an episode into a finale, so there wasn't much they could do with it. They did use a different "big reveal" than the original to make it different (and from earlier episodes it was clear that it was at least the basic idea they had planned from the beginning) but I think calling it "the biggest pile of crap" in regards to the ending is really unfair. The mystery was never the purpose of the show; it was just a MacGuffin on which to hang some great characters and a little mystery.

I've not seen it, hence why I said I heard it was the biggest pile of crap. Anyway, why the hell do you need to remake a show that's recent and above all fucking brilliant? Don't fix something thats not broken!

Well, either way, sentiment applies to people who told you it was crap :) They remake them because the originals don't fit with American TV marketing strategies. It's simply more profitable to rebuild a franchise with more episodes and local production, though I sort of wonder why they keep thinking this since basically every remake has tanked other than The Office. I don't mind it--a good story with good characters is enjoyable whether it's rebooted or not. I like both versions of the Office and Life on Mars. And sometimes rebooting gives the original more visibility than it otherwise had. I hardly knew anyone who had seen the BBC Office before NBC popularized it.

But all of the American fans I know love and adore the British version and don't like the American one - so the marketing excuse isn't working in this case. If it was meant to be for the american market, why did it get caned after one series?

Re: OP

Because a lot more goes into success than just the strength of the writing or actors? It's impossible to predict, and networks don't help by moving things around or giving them bad time slots. Most shows get canceled, so why would that be any different for shows readapted from foreign originals? Life on Mars was canceled almost concurrently with US originals Pushing Daisies and Life, both of which were very niche-popular and well-reviewed. The American model of TV production, networks, and selling ad space doesn't lend itself well to import or small hits. I wish we did import more direct to TV so I don't have to hunt down the DVDs all the time *and* made more US series on the foreign model, but our public TV station is not like the BBC. The only imports that have done well are high profile things like Dr. Who that have full-length seasons and can get a large audience by cable standards.

And people who liked the UK version first were probably just adverse to a remake. It's a common sentiment, but when there are very few US fans of the original (it never aired on network TV and BBC America is not carried by every cable provider; I didn't get it until last year) for 95%+ of TV watchers the remake is the first they'll ever see or hear of it. Most of my friends are sci-fi fans, hadn't seen the original, and liked the US version. It got pretty good press when it aired, it just didn't get the numbers necessary to avoid the axe.

It goes both ways, too--why does the UK need its own Law and Order when there are endless iterations of L&O already in existence? Probably for the same reason CBS is producing a pilot based on Wire in the Blood instead of airing the original.
