Do you honestly think that's what I was arguing? It's always easy to refute a strawman.

(FUCK I DO NOT WANT TO BRING THIS WANK UP AGAIN, but the point I was *trying* to get across is that anime fans, like most nerd subgroups, take way too much shit for their hobby, and that it has real psychological effects - social anxiety/withdrawal and depression, mostly. And picking on them online for it is Not Cool, no matter how badly you need someone to feel superior to. I'm sick of being an acceptable target.

y'know it's funny... as a comic book/anime/cartoon/battlestar galactica/sci-fi fan since grade school, i'm telling you you're full of shit. i've seen a fair amount of people kind of turn their nose because they don't understand why i like what i like. i've heard the terms: weeaboo, geek, nerd, pussy, faggot, etc. And you know what? I don't give a fuck. Because I'm A FUCKING ADULT and I know that haters are gonna hate, people are always going to be shitty, and it's MY JOB to learn how to cope with that.

Is anyone not hiring you for a job because you like anime? NO.
Is anyone not serving you in a restaurant because you like anime? NO.
Is anyone chasing you out of an establishment because they dont' like your type around there? NO.

People don't understand your hobby and they find it quirky. Sometimes they use harsh words. The real world. Let me show you it.

People aren't jumping on your because you like anime, you moron. They're "picking on" you because you're trying to convince yourself and everyone else that you're some poor oppressed minority that feels "social anxiety/withdrawal and despression" because of your FUCKING HOBBY.

It's pathetic and you really need to grow the fuck up, learn to cope, enjoy your anime, and get on with your life. LIKE THE REST OF US. If you're not willing to grow up and help yourself like a big boy, then you deserve whatever you get.

So you never got anything more than "sometimes people using harsh words" and were able to shrug it off. Congratulations. Do you want a medal?

Why don't you try thinking critically about those who didn't, the reasons WHY they didn't (hint: it's somewhat more complex than "people needing to grow the fuck up") and start working on fixing it instead of hurling insults at anyone who even tries to raise the issue?

This isn't about me. This is about seeing way too much low self-esteem and social anxiety and depression from my friends and fellow forum-goers, much more than I see in the general population. This is about calling people out for using derogatory terms freely for a group of people who may not be a ZOMGMINORITY, but as a community sure seem to deal with disproportionately high levels of loneliness, mental illness, and yes, even unemployment. And ultimately, this is about trying to get people to THINK before they open their mouths and start being dicks.

Maybe my experience is extremely atypical. Maybe apart from that one anime board I browse and a fair percentage of people on my flist, anime fans are no worse off per-capita than the general population, and easily shrug off any insults they get for it. But even if that was the case? It doesn't justify flaming the hell out of someone for saying "That term offends me. Knock it off" or "Stop. You're being a jerk." Let alone sniping them in other comms.

Social anxiety disorder and depression are not caused by exterior factors, but rather the chemicals in your brain. This is, shockingly enough, also your responsibility to address and not the fault of some varsity dorks or people on the internet. You should take responsibility for what you're in control of and learn how to cope with what you can't and learn how to get a little perspective on what real oppression and real social problems look like.

People will continue flaming you as long as you continue to make a joke of yourself. Since you're obviously unable to realize this, since it's obviously a lot easier for you to whine about how the world doesn't accept you for how much you love your animes and how it's everyone else's fault that you're socially awkward and/or depressed, I don't count on that happening anytime soon.

Also, take my advice: NEVER NEVER NEVER visit Japan. Otaku are accept a LOT more in the US than they are in Japan.
